Lutein is an abundant carotenoid found in many fruits and vegetables. Spinach and kale contain the highest levels of lutein, but it is also present in corn and egg yolks.
Lutein belongs to a chemical class of compounds called carotenoids. As an antioxidant, lutein may protect the macula tissue from damaging oxidation by filtering blue light. Lutein absorbs damaging UV radiation and dissipates it harmlessly. |

Our VMIXX™ Hydrate process is superior. In raw vegetables, lutein is locked within the vegetable's cellular structure. Hydrating according to our proprietary VMIXX™ technique unlocks the cell walls and releases lutein, improving bioavailability. Lutein is more easily absorbed when served with our Harmony EFS’s. The body is unable to manufacture lutein. Consumption of either a high leafy green diet or dietary supplements are the only ways for the body to obtain lutein. |
The macula is a small spot located directly behind the lens in the middle portion of the retina. It is responsible for central vision. |
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in dogs and cats over the age of 6 years. AMD occurs when the cells in the macula begin to break down, eventually causing loss of sight in the central part of the field of vision, but leaving peripheral vision intact. |

There are several factors that may increase risk of developing the disease: age, diet, lifetime exposure to sunlight, poor diet, heredity, gender, breed, eye color, environmental causes, and heart disease. For example, pets with blue/green eyes, seniors, can be at greater risk. |
For the first time, the benefit of lutein supplementation for eye health was shown by a study known as the “Lutein Antioxidant Supplementation Trial” (LAST). This study showed a statistically significant improvement in visual function, glare recovery, and contrast sensitivity. This study suggests that AMD is, at least in part, a nutrition-responsive disorder, and that supplementation, particularly with lutein, can improve eye function and slow the progression of the disease. Other studies have supported the role of lutein in AMD. |
